Smarty had a party
You'd have thought there were no other horses in the Belmont Stakes . . . even after Smarty Jones was defeated. The TV crews sought reaction from the Smarty Jones jockey first, and once they got to the trainer of the winner, Birdstone, they cut him short to get comments from someone else in the Smarty Jones camp. Birdstone's jockey apologized for winning the race, saying he was just doing his job.
Sheesh. I was rooting for Smarty, too, who looks to be a fine young horse (and ran a good race, but appeared to take the lead a tad too early on this longer track), but it doesn't seem right that the winning horse and his jockey, trainer, and owners should be given such short shrift.

affect and effect
affect: most commonly a verb--something affects something else. The only noun use of this word is specific to psychology/psychiatry. effect: most commonly a noun--as in cause and effect. Curiously, when this word is used as a verb, it means "cause."
Just had to get that off my chest.
